Water-Based Ink vs Traditional Solvent Ink: Cost & Professional Advantages of Eco Printing

Jul 27, 2026

With tightening environmental standards in the packaging industry, many mistakenly believe that water-based ink printing is more expensive. Below is a professional comparison of the two types of ink.

1. Environmental Compliance: Water-based inks are water-based, low in VOCs, benzene-free, and have a mild odor. They pass food contact safety tests and pose no risk of exceeding environmental standards in spot checks.

Solvent-based inks contain large amounts of volatile organic solvents, leaving more harmful residues. They are unsuitable for food and baby product packaging; moreover, they are classified as hazardous chemicals, resulting in high costs for waste gas and hazardous waste treatment.

2. Finished Product Quality: High-end water-based inks offer rich colors and strong adhesion, compatible with white cardboard, kraft paper, synthetic paper, and various corrugated cardboard. They are compatible with post-processing such as lamination and hot stamping, producing a delicate texture suitable for high-end gift boxes and premium color boxes.

Solvent-based inks have a strong odor and a rough texture, suitable only for low-requirement ordinary cardboard boxes.

3. Overall Production Cost: While the unit price of raw materials for water-based inks is slightly higher, the elimination of hidden costs such as waste gas treatment, hazardous waste disposal, and rework/scrapping results in lower overall long-term production costs. Solvent-based inks may seem to have cheaper raw materials, but the associated costs of environmental maintenance and risk compensation are extremely high.

Recommended Application Scenarios: Water-based inks are preferred for food, cosmetics, and baby packaging; high-end color boxes, micro-corrugated gift boxes, kraft paper bags, and other premium packaging.

Solvent-based inks are only suitable for simple cardboard boxes without environmental requirements.

Water-based inks are the preferred solution for environmental upgrades in the packaging and printing industry, balancing compliance and safety, product quality, and long-term cost advantages. For customized environmental printing solutions, please inquire.
